Dataset: Tidal limits and fluvial/estuarine catchments of NSW estuaries

The catchment area draining to each estuary has been defined as a GIS spatial layer (line and polygon) based on the digitising of catchments for the NSW Stressed Rivers Assessments conducted for the water sharing plan process (see catchment drainage basin metadata). A survey of the tidal limits was carried out between 1996 and 2005 by Manly Hydraulics Laboratory on behalf of the Department of Natural Resources as detailed in the report Survey of tidal limits and mangrove limits in NSW estuaries 1996 to 2005, 2006. Coordinates of the tidal limits were mapped using GIS and a boundary created between the upper (fluvial) catchment draining directly to the river system above the tidal limits and the lower (estuarine) catchment draining directly to the estuary and its tributaries. The 1:25,000 topographic map series, catchment drainage basin spatial layer and tidal limit coordinates were the primary datasets.
